Rutsiro: Kivu Beach Expo & Festival Poised to Reignite Tourism in Boneza

Rutsiro District, together with Yirunga Ltd, is ramping up preparations for the Kivu Beach Expo & Festival, set for December 9–15, 2025. The event, which combines a large-scale exposition with cultural and recreational activities, is positioned as a major catalyst for revitalizing tourism in Boneza and the wider Lake Kivu region.

During ongoing field visits, tourism stakeholders along Lake Kivu expressed renewed confidence in the district’s tourism prospects. Hon. Odette Nyiramirimo of Ruchel Hotel and the management of KaySun Hotel welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to boost visitor turnout and strengthen Boneza’s international visibility.

Residents of Bugarura Island home to more than 2,000 people also recognize the festival’s significance, noting that tourism has already enhanced the island’s reputation. They believe the event will intensify their involvement in local development and reinforce environmental protection efforts.

Yirunga Ltd Director Yves Iyaremye revealed that this year’s edition will introduce new attractions designed to draw adventurers and international tourists. Featured activities will include a 20 km hike from Palega Beach Inn, a badminton-inspired sports tournament at KaySun Hotel, boat and swimming competitions, beach volleyball, eco-tourism circuits around Boneza Coffee, and excursions to Napoleon Island. One of the signature highlights will be demonstrations of the famed Inyambo cattle swimming in Lake Kivu.

According to Boneza Sector Executive Secretary Munyamahoro Muhizi Patrick, the festival offers a strategic moment to position Boneza as a leading destination for ecological, cultural, and community tourism. The sector, he said, prides itself on its rare natural assets ranging from multiple islands to exceptional birdlife and modern hospitality facilities.

Rutsiro District Mayor Kayitesi Dativa underscored the festival’s broader significance, describing it as an invaluable opportunity to showcase the district’s untapped tourism potential. She emphasized the importance of promoting environmental conservation, particularly by encouraging communities to plant and protect trees along Lake Kivu’s shores. The festival, she added, is expected to attract new investors and improve the livelihoods of residents.

The festival will be hosted in the expansive gardens of Palega Beach Inn, offering panoramic views of Bugarura Island. Among the most anticipated attractions is the innovative Boat Party a floating celebration set for December 13 and 14, featuring DJs and live performers aboard boats cruising the lake.
